Background of the Dish
The shrimp and chorizo recipe is a mix of the staple ingredients in Andalusian cuisine: chorizo, shrimp (or seafood), garlic, and tomatoes.
It may sound like a strange combination, but the best seafood recipes are the ones that include other proteins, such as the famous Spanish chorizo and clams.
The shrimp and chorizo are commonly served as tapas or appetizers, but if you end up loving them you can double the ingredients and serve them as a main dish.

Things You’ll Need for Shrimp and Chorizo Recipe
To make this chorizo and shrimp recipe the only ingredients that you can’t miss are shrimp, chorizo, and tomatoes.
However, you can make some replacements for the listed ingredients, but we will talk about them later.
When it comes to the equipment for the Spanish shrimp recipe, all you need is a large pan.
Ingredients
- 500g shrimp
- 500g Spanish chorizo
- 2 garlic cloves (minced)
- 1 onion
- 1/2 cup (120ml) vegetable or beef broth
- 3 ripe tomatoes
- 1/2 cup (100ml) tomato sauce
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- Salt and pepper to taste
How to Make Shrimp and Chorizo Recipe – Step by Step Guide
- To start with this Spanish chorizo recipe you have to chop the onion into small cubes and mince the garlic, then set it aside. Do the same with the ripe tomatoes.
- Now clean the shrimp if necessary, removing any inedible parts. You can also buy it clean and skip this step.
- After that, put the shrimp in a bowl, pour salt, pepper, and paprika, and move it around so every shrimp gets coated with the seasoning. Set it aside for a bit.
- Then, chop the Spanish chorizo into slices or small cubes. Set aside for a bit.
- Now grab a pan and place the tablespoon of olive oil (you can use a little more if necessary, or use a different type of oil). Heat it on the stove to medium heat.
- Once it’s hot, sear the Spanish shrimp on both sides. It should take 2 minutes per side. After that, remove them from the pan and set them aside.
- Next, add the chorizo pieces and cook them for about 5 minutes or until they get crispy on the outside.
- After that, you can add the chopped onion and minced garlic and cook for 5 more minutes. Stir everything so they don’t burn.
- Then, pour the broth, chopped ripe tomatoes, tomato sauce, and more seasoning into the pan. Cook for 5 more minutes.
- For the final step of this shrimp and chorizo recipe you just have to stir everything and add the cooked shrimp again for 1 minute.
- Once the shrimp and chorizo are warm and the sauce is thick, you can serve the dish.
Substitution of Ingredients
This shrimp and chorizo recipe is pretty simple and only calls for 3 main ingredients: chorizo, shrimp, and tomatoes.
The tomatoes are key because they are the perfect sauce for any shrimp Spanish recipes, and of course, it works well here too.
However, you can skip using fresh tomatoes and just stick to the store-bought sauce (it is a great option if you are low on time or can’t find good tomatoes).
As well as other recipes with chorizo, technically you can replace it with other big sausages like the British tomato sausage, Italian or German sausage.
Apart from that, you can make this shrimp and chorizo recipe without onion and garlic, and add bell peppers, or any vegetable of your choice.
Tips on Serving Shrimp and Chorizo Recipe
This is probably one of the best chorizo recipes for dinner, because it is delicious, and it also isn’t as heavy as others.
What we love the most is that as soon as you finish making the shrimp and chorizo recipe you can serve the dish.
We recommend that you serve it with some bread or toasted bread and some simple iceberg salad since the sauce is too delicious and we don’t want it to go to waste.
These shrimp tapas also work well with any type of beverage, but the best is water or white wine, to let the ingredients of the shrimp with chorizo shine.
Feel free to try and make other meals with chorizo such as the Chorizo in cider.
How to Store Shrimp and Chorizo Recipe
Similar to what happens with other Spanish shrimp recipes, the fresher you eat the better.
Of course, you can store it for later, but keep in mind that the shrimp might get a gummy texture that’s a bit weird.
Still, if you make this shrimp and chorizo recipe and choose to store it, then you can do it for 4 days in the fridge or 15 days in the freezer.
In both cases, let the dish come to room temperature and then place it in a covered container before storing it.
