Background of the Dish

Among other Andalusian salads like the Spanish tomato salad or the ensalada de pepino, the ensalada de espinacas is probably the most innovative one.

This Spanish salad is one of the freshest that you will find (right along with the Ensalada de mango), and the combination with the spinach fills it with nutrients.

There isn’t an exact date for its creation, but over the past few decades, it increased in popularity, especially during the summer months.

  1. To start making the spinach fruit salad, you have to cut and wash the spinach. You can leave them soaking in a bowl covered with water to make sure all the dirt is gone. Then dry them well.
  1. For the next step, chop and toast the nuts. Remember that you can use walnuts, almonds, or a mix of them (and if you have an allergy just remove them completely). Set them aside for a bit.
  1. Now, wash the strawberries making sure to remove all of the dirt. Remove the green leaves on top (if they have them) and cut them into thin slices (or bigger chunks if you rather feel the texture).
  1. After that, put the drained spinach in a bowl. Also, add salt and pepper to taste and toss it around a little bit.
  1. Then, pour the vinegar and oil into the salad, mixing well so that all the spinach leaves are covered.
  1. As an optional step on this Mediterranean spinach salad, you can cut a piece of Manchego cheese and put it in the salad, or grate it on top.
  1. For the final step, add the toasted nuts and the strawberry slices. Now you can serve the spinach salad with strawberries and walnuts.

Substitution of Ingredients

The main ingredients for this ensalada de espinacas are spinach, strawberry, and nuts, but there are a few changes that you can make.

For example, if you don’t want to use a mix of nuts, you can turn this into an exclusively spinach strawberry almond salad, or even a spinach salad with strawberries and pecans.

For this easy spinach salad recipe, strawberries are the perfect fruit, but spinach also goes well with apples, pears, and even mango or peach, so you can try them.

And while you’re at it, try our Spanish fruit salad as well, a sweet salad that’s also a dessert.

The combination between vinegar and olive oil is the best spinach salad dressing, but feel free to use your favorite one or make changes, like using sunflower oil with balsamic vinegar.

Try another simple Spanish salad recipe that is made with just one main ingredient, ensalada de repollo, aka cabbage salad.

If you want to try other sweet and salty salad combinations, go with the refreshing ensalada de melon with serrano ham and feta cheese.

Tips on Serving Ensalada de Espinacas

The ensalada de espinacas is the perfect summer salad because it is 100% fresh, so we recommend serving it as soon as you finish making it.

You can have the spinach salad with strawberries and almonds for lunch or dinner, as a side dish, or as a main dish.

In case you want to serve it as a main dish, you have to serve a bigger portion or add other ingredients like tofu for a vegan option.

For a non-vegan version, you can serve this spinach salad with eggs, you can boil them, chop them and place them on top.

If you want to serve it as the spinach side salad, then it goes well with any other type of protein that doesn’t have a big flavor profile, so that they don’t overpower each other (chicken works amazing).

Go on and try our easy-to-make ensalada de zanahoria, a tasty Spanish carrot salad, that’s also vegan and can be served as a side dish.

How to Store Ensalada de Espinacas

How to Store Ensalada de Espinacas. Ingredients such as nuts, apple, salad in a fridge.

We truly believe that this is the best ever strawberry spinach salad, but it does have the downside that you can’t store it for too long.

Before adding the healthy spinach salad dressing, you can store it for up to 24 hours in the fridge.

After dressing it, you shouldn’t store the ensalada de espinacas for more than one hour.

If you are looking for Spanish salads that can be stored for a bit longer, then you should check the Spanish tuna salad, the Spanish octopus salad, the ensalada de bacalao, and the ensalada de cangrejo.

Lastly, you can prepare this strawberry spinach salad with balsamic dressing, but keep in mind that it has a strong flavor so use a small amount.
