Background of the Dish

The Spanish fruit salad is a staple recipe from Andalusian and Latin American cuisine, and the best part is that everyone can give it their twist.

What makes this recipe Spanish is the fact that the fruits used are the most common ones in Spain, or the ones that are produced in the Southern region of the country (especially Malaga).

Other salad recipes from Spain where fruits are the main ingredients are the ensalada de mango and the easy apple Manchego salad.

  1. To start making this sweet Spanish ensalada recipe just wash all fruits with plenty of water. Peel them (except for the strawberries and oranges)
  1. After that, cut all the fruits (except oranges) into small cubes. When it comes to the strawberries, cut them into slices.
  1. For the next step, you have to squeeze the juice from the oranges and pass it through a strainer to remove any seeds or pulp.
  1. Now put everything in a large bowl and mix well. Optionally, you can add raisins from Malaga. Taste the Spanish salad and if you think it needs a sweet touch, you can add two tablespoons of honey (and add until it reaches the flavor you like).
  1. For the final step take the bowl with the fruit salad to cool in the fridge for 20 minutes. Serve the Spanish fruit salad cold.

As well as it happens with the savory salad, you can use any type of fruit to make the Spanish fruit salad.

At the end of the day, the best fruit for salad is the one that’s fresh at the time and place where you are making the recipe.

The fruits that are good all year round are apples and oranges, the other ones listed are summer and spring fruits.

If you are a big fan of the sweet-and-sour combination, try a full summer citrus salad with oranges, pink grapefruit, etc.

For an old fashioned fruit salad keep the raisins from Malaga and add a shot of rum to give it an extra kick (that would exclude it from the fruit salad recipes for kids)

Tips on Serving Spanish Fruit Salad

If there is something that we love more than making the Spanish salad is eating it, and thankfully the serving process is super easy.

You can grab small bowls (or short glasses can work too), and pour a few generous scoops of the Spanish fruit salad in.

To turn it into the perfect summer dessert, you can serve the fruit salad with ice cream.

If you want it to be more of a snack or a lighter dessert, then serve the fruit salad with whipped cream (any creamy combination works well with this dish.).

Believe it or not, you can turn this into a tropical fruit cocktail, you just have to fill 2/3 of a glass with the Spanish fruit salad, and the rest with a shot of vodka or gin.

How to Store Spanish Fruit Salad

How to Store Spanish Fruit Salad. Ingredients such as nuts, apple, salad in a fridge.

As soon as you finish preparing this Spanish summer salad you can store it for a couple of hours in the fridge.

It is better to only store the Spanish fruit salad for up to 2 hours, but some people leave it in the fridge for 24 hours so it gains more flavor (you can do that too).

Keep in mind that Spanish fruits don’t have any preservatives, so they can’t be stored for a longer amount of time, and they can’t be frozen.

We recommend that you store the Spanish salad in a covered container (with a lid or plastic wrap) to prevent it from absorbing the smells of the other food items in the fridge.

Notes

The Malaga raisins are optional but they are the right Andalusian touch for the recipe (just like the mango).

If you skip the honey as the optional sweetener (or use another one) you will have a vegan fruit salad.
