Background of the Dish

There isn’t an exact date for the creation of the churros, but records show that they have been present in Andalusian cookbooks for more than 300 years, with some historians tracing their origins back to shepherds who made the dough as a simple fried treat in the mountains.

With time, this sweet and salty dish became a classic of Spanish cuisine, shining thanks to its simplicity and versatility, which allows you to enjoy it any time of the day, all year round.

Today, you can find new and innovative versions of this dish, like the churros balls recipe and the churro cheesecake, but the easy churros recipe remains a timeless classic.

  1. For the first step in this easy recipe to make churros you have to place a pot over medium heat and melt the butter. Then, mix in the water, sugar, and salt, then bring it to a boil.
  1. When the mix boils, lower the heat and add the flour all at once. Stir vigorously until you dissolve all of the lumps and the flour is fully combined.
  1. Now, remove the pot from the heat and let it cool for 5 to 10 minutes so as not to end up with scrambled eggs. Incorporate the eggs one by one,  mixing thoroughly until you get a smooth yet sticky dough.
  1. For the next step in the best Spanish churros recipe, fill a frying pan with oil (you should fill it around 2 inches) and heat it over medium heat. If you have a thermometer it should be 180°C or 355°F to get the perfect churro.
  1. Then, place the dough in a piping bag, or a clean ziploc bag (you should cut the corner). To get the classic churro shape you should use a star tip, or even better a churrera if you have one.
  1. One of the most important steps in this easy Spanish churros recipe is to pipe strips of the dough into the hot oil. You can make them into spirals or your favorite shape if desired.
  1. After that, cook the churros for about 3 minutes per side or until golden brown. Remove from the oil and place them on top of kitchen paper to drain the excess oil.
  1. Similar to the classic Spanish churros recipe, you can coat them with white granulated sugar and cinnamon, but for this recipe it is optional.
  1. For the final step in this easy churros recipe, simply serve them warm or at room temperature. As an alternative, you can dip them in melted chocolate.

Customizing the ingredients for this authentic Spanish churros recipe is super simple, but there are some guidelines that you should have in mind.

First, you can make this recipe for Spanish churros with gluten-free flour, but be sure to incorporate a teaspoon of gluten-free baking powder so as not to end up with chewy and dense churros.

Different from the homemade churros and the traditional churros recipe, the granulated sugar and cinnamon coating is optional here, but we encourage you to do it as it will add extra sweetness and texture.

Besides that, some people prepare the easy homemade churros recipe with vegetable oil instead of butter, which is a great substitution but keep in mind that the texture and flavor may slightly differ, as butter adds a richer taste and a softer dough consistency compared to oil.

For healthier churros alternatives, we recommend that you check some of our different recipes, like the churros air fryer recipe or the baked churros.

How to Store Easy Churros Recipe

Not only is this easy churros recipe super simple to make, but you can also choose to store it if you have leftovers or if you want to prepare them in advance.

First, you can store the cooked churros in a covered container (with plastic wrap or a lid) and keep them at room temperature for 2 days or in the fridge for 7 days.

To store them for longer, let them cook to room temperature and cover them, then you will be able to freeze them for up to 2 weeks.

You can also store the raw dough, but we recommend that you pipe the churros into their desired shape before doing so, and when ready to fry, simply cook them straight from frozen without thawing for the best results.

Other Spanish desserts that you can make and store in different ways include the pestinos, the Spanish dessert churros, and the breakfast churros.
