Background of the Dish

The trampo salad is a fan favorite among traditional Spanish salads, mainly thanks to its simplicity and fantastic flavors.

Its origins go back to the farmers and peasants of the region in the 1800s, who prepared it with the ingredients available in their rural environment, so it was a cheap option to eat and stay fresh during the summer.

Nowadays, the trampo salad is an iconic dish of the Balearic Islands, and it quickly arrived in Southern Spain as well as other regions of the country.

  1. To start making this simple Spanish salad recipe you have to wash the tomatoes, peppers, and onion to remove any dirt that might be present.
  1. After that, cut the tomatoes into small cubes and place them on a large plate or salad bowl.
  1. Now grab the green bell peppers, remove the seeds, and cut them into smaller cubes. Also, add them to the dish with the tomatoes.
  1. For the next step on this Spanish salad, you have to peel the onion and cut it into small fine cubes. Also, add them to the plate.
  1. Then, sprinkle a pinch of salt over the vegetables. Mix so that all of the ingredients get coated in it. You can add other seasoning or spice to your green pepper and tomato salad, but the vegetables already add most of the flavor.
  1. Now, add a generous stream of extra virgin olive oil. It should be about 4 to 6 tablespoons, depending on your taste (but it can also be more or less, it’s completely up to you).
  1. After that, mix all the ingredients together to ensure they are well-seasoned.
  1. Then you have to taste the tomato and onion salad and adjust the amount of salt and olive oil to your preference.
  1. For the final step, take the salad to the fridge for at least 30 minutes before serving, so the flavors can blend and it can cool properly. Now you can serve the trampo salad.

Substitution of Ingredients

The trampo salad stands out from other easy Spanish salad recipes due to how few ingredients you need to make it, still, there are some substitutions that you can do to them.

For example, you can replace the green bell pepper with red or yellow bell pepper (or use a mix of them).

You can use any type of tomato for the trampo salad, but we don’t recommend using canned tomatoes, as this salad is meant to be made with fresh vegetables.

Lastly, if you don’t have olive oil, then you can use sunflower oil or other light vegetable oil.

Tips on Serving Trampo Salad

There is nothing easier than serving this onion tomato salad, you can have it for lunch or dinner and as much as you like.

It is the perfect side dish, as it isn’t too heavy or filling, and for that same reason, we recommend serving it with a main dish like Spanish grilled mackerel, Spanish chicken skewers, etc.

To take this trampo salad to the next level, you can top it with some pieces of feta cheese, small cubes of manchego cheese, or some olives.

Besides that, you can do like other salads from Spain and serve it as a tapas (appetizer) with some slices of your favorite toasted bread.

If you have planned a nice dinner or have guests over, then you can prepare a salad bar with other traditional Spanish salads, such as ensalada de gambas or ensalada de melon.

Give a go to other simple salads like the Spanish tomato salad, ensalada de pepino, or the Spanish green salad that doesn’t have any type of meat.

How to Store Trampo Salad

How to Store Trampo Salad. Ingredients and plastic containers in a fridge.

The trampo salad is a fantastic fresh Spanish summer salad, but that also means that you can’t store it for too long.

You can store the tomato and pepper salad for up to 24 hours in the fridge before dressing it.

Make sure to store the trampo salad in a covered container, with a lid, plastic wrap, or a clean plastic bag, so it doesn’t go to waste.
