Background of the Dish

Churros with eggs recipes are very popular in Andalusia, with some newer options like the churros cheesecake or the churros air fryer recipe, but the churros without eggs remain a timeless gem.

They were created almost at the same time as the classic homemade churros, as they provided an even cheaper option to enjoy this famous dessert at home.

Today, the churros without eggs still hold a strong fan base in Southern Spain, as they remain one of the best alternatives for a lighter, crispier churro that showcases the simplicity of the traditional version.

Things You’ll Need for Churros Without Eggs

To make churros without eggs you will need flour, water, baking powder, salt, cinnamon and granulated sugar as the main ingredients.

As you will see in the how to make eggless churros section, you only need a piping bag or a clean ziplock bag as the kitchen tools.

flour in a wooden spoon and bowl and sugar coming out from the bag on a wooden table for the churros without eggs

Ingredients

  • 2 cups (250gr) flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup (240ml)
  • A pinch of salt
  • 3/4 cups (150gr) white granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)

How to Make Churros Without Eggs – Step by Step Guide

a bowl of flour for the churros without eggs
  1. To start making the easy churros recipe, grab a large heat-safe bowl and mix the baking powder with the cups of flour. Set it aside.
  1. After that, grab a saucepan and heat the water with a pinch of salt. Once it boils, pour it all on top of the flour mix.
  1. Then, using a wooden spoon, integrate the flour with the water until you get a sticky yet homogenous dough. Let the churros without eggs dough rest for 15 minutes (cover the bowl with a clean cloth).
  1. For the next step in this churros Spanish recipe, put the dough into a piping bag fitted with a star tip (or a clean Ziploc bag with a cut in the corner).
  1. Now, pour vegetable oil into a frying pan (around 2 to 3 inches, or enough to cover the churros), and heat it over medium heat.
  1. Once the oil is hot, pipe the churros without eggs into it, cutting the strips to your preferred size. You could also pipe the dough into pieces of parchment paper and then transfer it to the hot oil (which is better if you aren’t used to frying).
  1. For the cooking step of the homemade churros recipe, fry the churros for around 4 minutes per side, until they get a golden and crispy exterior, but are fully cooked on the inside.
  1. Once the churros are cooked, remove them from the oil and drain the excess oil by placing them on top of kitchen paper. This is a key step so that your churros don’t end up oily.
  1. Then, grab a plate and mix the sugar with the cinnamon powder. Pass the churros without eggs through that mixture while they are warm, so they get fully coated (if the churro is too hot you can help yourself with forks).
  1. For the final step in this Spanish churros recipe, serve them warm and enjoy. Optionally, you can serve them with your favorite sweet sauce (caramel, chocolate, Nutella, strawberry jam, etc.) as a dip.

Substitution of Ingredients

We know that you will adore this churros recipe without eggs because, if needed, you can make some substitutions.

First, you can prepare the churros without eggs with gluten-free flour, though we recommend adding a teaspoon of baking powder (also gluten-free) so that they aren’t too dense).

You can add more flavor to this recipe for churros by incorporating flavorings into the dough, such as a teaspoon of vanilla extract, nutmeg, or cinnamon powder.

The exterior coating listed here is the classic one for churros recipes, but you could make it just with white sugar, or brown sugar for a less sweet aftertaste.

We have more Spanish churros recipes that fit different dietary restrictions without compromising the original flavor, such as the gluten-free churros, the healthy churros, and the churros without butter.

Tips on Serving Churros Without Eggs

As you saw before, how to make churros without eggs is super simple, and serving them is even easier.

You just have to put the cinnamon sugar-coated churros into a plate and serve them warm for breakfast, as an afternoon snack, or as a dessert.

For a healthy dessert, you can use the churros without eggs as the topping for a small bowl of yogurt with chopped fresh fruits.

Besides that, you could copy the classic homemade churros recipes and serve them with a nice cup of hot chocolate, or other warm beverages like tea and coffee.

Do you need more inspiration for the toppings? Then you should read our churros with Nutella, our churros with caramel sauce and the churros with dipping sauce articles, as they provide an insight into the best dipping sauces that you will find.

How to Store Churros Without Eggs

How to Store Churros Without Eggs. An open fridge with various vegetables and fruits in plastic containers.

Something that makes Spanish churro recipes soft and fluffy on the inside is the eggs, so when you make this churro without eggs, the best option is to serve them right away (so you won’t get dense churros).

Still, you could store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, then reheat them in the oven before serving.

For longer storage, refrigerate them for up to 5 days and reheat them in an oven or air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for a few minutes.

We don’t recommend that you freeze the dough or the cooked churros without eggs as they will become too hard and dense, but for that way of storing you could make the traditional churros recipe or the breakfast churros.
