Background of the Dish

Classic churros were created centuries ago in Spain as a way to save money and give a new life to the ingredients that everyone had at home (egg, flour, and sugar).

Over time, the distinct churro flavor—a sweet blend with hints of vanilla and cinnamon—gained widespread popularity, inspiring the creation of various dishes, including the innovative churros cake.

Today, this churros cake is enjoyed mostly for holidays and birthdays in Southern Spain, occasionally sharing the spotlight with other churro recipes like the churros cheesecake, the breakfast churros, and the homemade churros.

Things You’ll Need for Churros Cake

To prepare the best churros cake you will need flour, eggs, milk, butter, sugar, cinnamon, baking powder, and vanilla extract.

Different from the traditional Spanish churros, for this recipe it is recommended that you use a hand or stand mixer, as it will make the mixing process easier and ensure a smooth, well-combined batter.

  • 4 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups (300gr) white granulated sugar
  • 1 1/4 cups (300ml) milk

How to Make Churros Cake – Step by Step Guide

A woman using a hand mixer to mix butter and sugar in a glass bowl for the churros cake
  1. For the first step in this Spanish churros recipe, you have to preheat the oven to 180°C (or 355°F) for 15 minutes.
  1. Now, grab a 28cm round cake pan (or 11 inches), grease it, and sprinkle some flour on top. You can also cover it with parchment paper if desired, and use a 22cm x 33cm (9×13 inches) rectangular pan if desired.
  1. After that, grab a large bowl and combine the flour, cinnamon, baking powder, and salt. Set it aside.
  1. Then, using another bowl mix the butter with the sugar until it reaches a light and fluffy creamy consistency and the sugar completely dissolves. You can do this with a whisk, but it will be easier with a hand or stand mixer.
  1. To continue making this Spanish churros recipe, add the eggs and incorporate them into the mix one by one. Then, add the vanilla extract and blend it in.
  1. Next, slowly add the dry churro pound cake ingredients and the milk, alternating between the two. Mix until the batter is smooth and doesn’t have any lumps left, but avoid overmixing to keep the cake light and soft.
  1. Then, pour the batter evenly into the cake pan. Bake the churros cake for 40 to 50 minutes or until it gets fully cooked (to check this you can insert a toothpick, if it comes out clean then the cake is cooked).
  1. As a key step in the churros Spanish recipe, let it cool for 15 minutes. Remove from the pan and let it cool in wire racks.
  1. To prepare the coating of this churro dessert grab a small bowl and mix the sugar with the cinnamon. Melt some butter and use it to brush the sides and top of the churros cake.
  1. After that, coat the Spanish churros cake evenly with the cinnamon sugar mixture. Be sure that every piece of cake has some of that topping.
  1. For the final step in this easy churros recipe, simply serve it right away or top it with chopped churro pieces or churro bites.

Substitution of Ingredients

churros cake filled with nuts

We created a churros cake recipe that could proudly take the torch of the famous Hispanic cake recipes, while only requiring easy-to-find ingredients, and offering plenty of substitutions for flexibility.

First, you can prepare the simple churros recipe with cake flour if you don’t have baking powder or your favorite kind of gluten-free mix.

Besides that, feel free to make this authentic Spanish churros recipe with plant-based milk, and vegetable oil instead of melted butter, and brown sugar.

Our favorite thing to do is, cut the churros cake in half and fill it with a mix of nuts, or whatever filling you like best (Nutella, gem, buttercream, etc).

If you want to enjoy churro desserts but you are on a diet then you should check some of our healthier alternatives, like the churros air fryer recipe and the baked churros.

The churro pieces as a topping are optional, but if you prepared the churros balls recipe or the traditional churros recipe and you have some leftovers then it is a great addition.

Tips on Serving Churros Cake

This dessert usually receives the name of “churros birthday cake”, but the good thing is that you can enjoy it all year round (whether it is your birthday or not).

Since this is the best churro cake recipe it will be ready to be served as soon as you finish it, and it can work as a dessert, an afternoon snack, or you can have it for breakfast.

You can copy the Pestinos and cover the churros cake with a delicious warm honey glaze, or try the Miguelitos approach by sprinkling powdered sugar on top.

For the beverages, you can make our delicious Spanish hot chocolate recipe, or go for other options like your favorite blend of tea, coffee, or coffee with milk.

With the colder weather ahead of us it is always a great idea to have different easy hispanic desserts on hand to enjoy, and we have others that you will love such as the Spanish turron, the Spanish Apple empanada, and the alfajores.

How to Store Churros Cake

How to Store Churros Cake. Ingredients such as nuts, apple, salad in a fridge.

We love this recipe for Spanish churros because you can either serve the cake right away for a warm, freshly baked treat or store it for later.

To store it, cover the churros cake with plastic wrap or place it in a covered airtight container, then you can keep it at room temperature for up to 3 days, or in the fridge for up to a week.

If you want to store it for longer, place it in a covered container and take it to the freezer, where you can store it for one month, then thaw it at room temperature before serving.

Other delicious Andalusian desserts you can prepare and store for later (at room temperature or in the fridge) are the classic Spanish dessert churros and the sweet alfajores.

Notes

Elevate this gem among churro desserts by drizzling some melted dulce de leche, melted chocolate sauce, or salted caramel on top.

Similar to other Spanish churros recipes, you can remove the cinnamon from the exterior coating if you don't like it, and replace it with vanilla sugar, white granulated sugar, or powdered sugar.

You can easily incorporate the flavors of the Spanish chocolate churros by adding some cocoa powder to the cake batter.
