Background of the Dish

Spanish fried goat cheese platter

This recipe is relatively more modern than other Spanish recipes since originally it was just fried goat cheese without honey.

In the 19th century, different flavor combinations began to be tested, especially cheese with sweets, and thus fried goat cheese with honey was born.

This dish managed to stand out from other tapas recipes such as Flamencquin cordobes and Mushroom croquettes since it can be served as a dessert or as a dish before lunch or dinner.

How to Make Fried Goat Cheese – Step by Step Guide

  1. To start making this fried goat cheese you have to keep the cheese in the fridge until you’re ready to make the recipe (the cheese needs to be cold and firm). You can cut the cheese into rounded or triangle slices, depending on the shape of the piece of cheese you have.
  1. Then, on a plate, beat the eggs with salt. At this point, you can add another seasoning for your goat cheese fritters if you like.
  1. Now grab two plates, in one of them pour the flour and in the other one put the breadcrumbs.
  1. In a frying pan, start to heat plenty of virgin olive oil (you can use any oil you want if you don’t like the olive one) over medium heat.
  1. In the meantime, pass the cheese balls or triangles through the egg, then through the flour, then through the egg again, and then through the breadcrumbs. You can repeat this one more time if you want an extra crunchy outside for your fried goat cheese balls.
  1. When the oil in the pan is hot, add cheese and let it brown first on one side, then turn it over to brown on the other, it will take 3 minutes on each side.
  1. When you remove the cheese from the pan, place it on absorbent kitchen paper to remove excess oil.
  1. For the final step, put the cheese bites on a plate and drizzle honey on top (if your honey is hard then heat it to melt). You can also put the honey in a mini bowl so each person can dip the fried goat cheese in as much honey as they want.

Substitution of Ingredients

As well as other goat cheese appetizer recipes, due to its simplicity in the ingredients, there is not much room for changes.

The important thing is that you have goat cheese, egg, and another coating so that it has a crunchy outside.

The ideal thing is to use flour and breadcrumbs, but you can use their gluten-free alternatives if you prefer.

You can also use another cheese such as American, cheddar, or mozzarella, but it would no longer be one of the goat cheese recipes.

Tips on Serving Fried Goat Cheese

As you can imagine this honey goat cheese is meant to be served as a Spanish tapa, so you can serve it before lunch or dinner, or as a snack at any time of the day.

If you don’t like honey, you can serve these goat cheese appetizers with other sauces.

The one that goes best with fried goat cheese is tomato sauce, or you can use red fruit jams.

Like other Spanish tapas recipes, such as the famous Spanish dates in bacon, the point is to mix sweet and salty flavors, so for that reason, it is recommended that the dipping sauce be sweet.

In some cases, these Spanish appetizers are served as a dessert, so if you do that you must serve it with honey.

You can also serve fried goat cheese as a main dish by adding some fried potatoes or patatas bravas.

Notes

For this fried cheese ball recipe you could add more seasoning, but the key is to let the flavors of the honey and goat cheese shine through.

An alternative to pan frying cheese is to cook it in an air fryer or oven, it has to be at a high temperature in both cases and it would take 20 to 30 minutes until it is golden (flipping halfway through).
