Background of the Dish
The original recipe of chocolate chip cookies was developed by Ruth Grave Wakefield in the 1930′.
She was the owner of an Inn in Massachusetts, and one of the characteristics of that Inn was that they gave all of their customers a “thank you” chocolate chip cookie.
Years later, the popularity of these Inn was so large that they even wrote a cooking book that, as you can guess, had the wonderful “Toll House Chocolate Crunch Cookie” recipe.
Of course, the recipe changed with time, but the base ingredients (flour, sugar, butter) remain the same in most of the recipes.
Since this recipe was so easy, people started making them in their homes and as years went by it became classical comfort food.
Things You’ll Need for Spanish Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe
This recipe for cookies with chocolate chips is without a doubt one of my favorites since it is very easy to make and you will have delicious cookies.
One of the things I like the most about this recipe is that if you use softened butter (a little more melted than at room temperature) then you can easily make it by mixing everything with your hands!
Anyway, if you don’t want to do that extra exercise then you can make these delicious cookies with the help of a stand or hand mixer.
As I will show you later, you can substitute different ingredients to adapt the recipe according to your tastes, so don’t worry if you don’t have all of them at home.
The base ingredients are flour, sugar, butter, and egg, although I will also give you tips to make this recipe vegan or gluten-free!
Ingredients for Spanish Chocolate Chip Cookies
- 1 cup (200g) butter
- ¾ cups (150g) white sugar
- ⅔ cups (130g) brown sugar
- 1 egg
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2 cups (300g) chocolate chips
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 2 ¼ cups (250g) flour
How to Make Spanish Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe – Step by Step Guide
- To start with this Spanish cookie you have to preheat the oven at 350°F or 180°C for 15 minutes. Of course, no one knows your oven better than you do, so feel free to use the temperature that you prefer.
- For the next step grab a small bowl and cream butter and sugar together. Creaming butter and sugars means mixing everything until the sugars are completely dissolved. You can do this step by hand or with the help of a hand or stand mixer.
- After that add egg and vanilla extract and keep mixing to combine, for about 1 minute. At this point, you can also add 1/2 teaspoon of salt, only if your butter is unsalted.
- Slowly add the flour, baking powder, and baking soda to the butter mixture, do it with the help of a spatula and enveloping movements. Make sure you don’t overmix this dough, cause otherwise, your cookies will get a hard texture.
- Then add chocolate chips until everything is incorporated. If you want a firmer or fluffy cookie, cover the bowl with the dough and let it rest in the fridge for 30 minutes. If you want a chewy chocolate cookie then skip this step.
- Line the cookies on a baking sheet at least an inch apart as they will grow in the oven. If you do this step with an ice cream scoop then you’ll have a better result, since every cookie will have the same size.
- Bake for 15 minutes at 350°F or until they’re cooked all the way through. Let them cool for 20 minutes and enjoy these chocolate cookies!
Substitution of Ingredients
There is nothing more fun than being able to be creative with ingredients while cooking, but this can be difficult to achieve when it comes to baking.
Fortunately, chocolate chip cookies are one of those pastry preparations that are easy to make and that allow you to play with different types of ingredients, always inventing a new flavor.
First I will talk about the changes you can make in what would be the “topping” of the recipe, that is, the chocolate chips.
Here let your imagination fly! you can make some m&m chocolate chip cookies, with either regular m&m’s or peanut M&M’s!
Besides that, you can grab dark chocolate chips and milk chocolate chips and make some delicious double chocolate chip cookies.
One of my favorite things to do is making chocolate cookies with white chocolate chips and also add some chopped walnuts.
If you check these chocolate chip cookie nutrition facts, then you’ll see that this recipe is the complete opposite of healthy, and that’s fine!
You can make this recipe and enjoy it without a drop of guilt in your body.
Now, if you do want to make it more healthy, then I’ll show you some ways to cut some calories from this recipe.
The easiest way is to make this recipe gluten-free and reduce some calories that come from flour.
All you have to do is to use any gluten-free flour and make sure that the baking soda and baking powder are gluten-free too.
Apart from that, you can lower the calories by replacing the butter with the vegan version of it (vegetable butter, or even coconut oil).
If you want to make this recipe completely vegan then replace the egg with a flax egg or 1/2 cup of banana puree.

Tips on Serving Spanish Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe
The great part of making homemade chocolate chip cookies is that you can customize them on many levels; you can either make substitutions for the ingredients or serve them in different ways.
For example, my favorite way of eating cookies is when I serve them alongside some delicious Spanish hot chocolate.
This is the best thing you can do if you’re eating cookies for breakfast or as an afternoon snack on cold winter days, especially if they are white chocolate chip cookies or even chocolate crackle cookies!

How to Store Spanish Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe
This tasty chocolate chip cookie recipe makes a lot of cookies, which is fine if you have guests or your family just loves cookies. But that isn’t the case for everyone, so I’m going to give you some tips on how you can store the leftover cookies.
The first thing you can do is store the baked cookies on a covered plate outside of the fridge.
This way, your cookies will last up to 3 days, and if you don’t want them to get hard I recommend you store them covered and with a slice of bread since that will help them to contain all the moisture.
Now if you rather freezing them, my advice is to do this before you bake your cookies. The easiest way to do this is to make the dough, shape it with an ice cream scoop and place them together (without any necessary distance) in a baking tray or any type of plate that can go in the freezer.
Then all you have to do is cover them and store them in the freezer, where they can last up to 3 months! and since they are already separated, you can grab a small amount from time to time and eat them!
You should let them unfreeze for at least 3 hours in your fridge before baking them, and if they’re still a little bit frozen then bake them for 5 more minutes.
